My Daily Spin – What is Tussah Silk, Anyway?

Right now I’m spinning Tussah Silk. What is that? It’s referred to as “wild silk”, as opposed to cultivated, although that is less likely to be true these days. Tussah silk is produced by moth caterpillars from the Antheraea family. It tends to be more sparkly looking and less uniform than cultivated silk, and is usually cream or honey colored rather than pure white. It’s a little easier to spin than “cultivated” (Bombyx or mulberry) silk and recommended for people who are learning to spin silk. That’s why I got it.

I’m starting to get more accustomed to this fiber, I was a little faster tonight. I’m happy with the spinning and plying ratios that I used on the last yarn, so I’m doing that again. I’ll also swatch the last sample just to see how it looks.

Until tomorrow.

My Daily Spin – It’s Going to be about Silk for a While

Tonight I plied the small Tussah samples I spun yesterday. I spun at 10:1, plied at 10:1 with around 7-8 treadles per “pull”. Basically the number of treadles acts as a multiplier to the wheel/flyer ratio so you can control the amount of twist.

Once it’s wound off & soaked, I’ll know how that combination works!

Until tomorrow.

My Daily Spin – the Silkening

I have been taken by surprise. This is my second day spinning silk to fine singles. Silk is a little tricky, but honestly no more difficult than merino, at least to me. As long as I take it slow, I’m fine.

So what’s the surprise? How much I am loving the “silky” feel of the fibers as they go through my fingers. I didn’t expect to like it that much, but I now have a whole new appreciation for the source of that adjective.

So now I’m pumped because I have a BUNCH of silk to spin – the rest of this Tussah silk, a pound of sari silk (yes, from recycled saris, very colorful) and an 18.2 oz. silk lap. Cool. See the pictures below.

Until tomorrow.

My Daily Spin – Silk

I think I need to start blogging every day again about my spinning practice. It helps keep me focused. Also, it helps me pin down details about what I’m doing and gives me a way to look back if I want to. So.

In my last post, I described the merino-silk blend and how I was practicing spinning thicker. Well, I did that and was actually pretty successful at keeping a consistent diameter over the whole 8 ounces. What was really interesting was what happened with the twist. I got a graphic example of how thickness and twist interact with each other. When I tried spinning thicker at the higher ratio (10:1) that I had used when spinning thinner, I got a LOT of twist in the singles, and plying at the related higher ratio (9:1) gave me a VERY tight yarn. You can see that here.

Tight 3-ply merino silk

So I backed off on the ratios (8:1 spin, 7:1 ply) for the next batch, and WOW what a difference. For this particular fiber, I like the lower twist much better. It feels better, and the colors are more vivid. The 3-ply yarn is about 7 WPI, which puts it in the Aran/Chunky weight range.

I have more of this fiber in a different colorway, but I’m going to save it for later. Right now I’m interesting in spinning silk fiber, because I bought this gorgeous silk lap in Texas, but I want to get some silk practice in before I touch it. So I got some undyed Tussah silk, and I’ve started spinning it. First, I did one 3-ply skein spun fairly thick. Now I’m spinning thinner with it and yes, it takes more twist very nicely.

My Daily Spin – Moving on

I have finished the last of the green fusion merino. It’s plied, soaked, and almost dry now. My desire to make it thicker worked, but I won’t do the WPI and know how much until it’s dry. I think I will also do a grist comparison between this and previous skeins. Say what? Grist is a measurement of density. Basically its pounds-per-inch. Along with WPI, it’s useful information about your yarn.

I had to think some about what to spin next. I decided on a merino-silk blend that I did a quick sample of a few weeks ago, it makes a stripey barber-pole type effect in the singles and has a tweedy look when you knit it. The sample I did before kind of “greyed” out to the eye – in other words, a lot of the color variation blended to look grey. Like with the merino, I’m deliberately spinning this thicker, so I’ll be interested to see of that makes a difference in the knitted result.

You can see the stripes in the roving and in the spun singles on the bobbin here.

Until next time.

My Daily Spin – Home Again, Home Again

I got home from Texas on Saturday night, and Sunday I sat down again at my spinning wheel. I have to be honest – I was a little worried. I’m spinning merino now, which is sort of tricky, and I hadn’t touched my wheel for over a week. So I was really relieved when it just felt natural and I started right up with no problem. I’ve spun every day since then, and I’m almost done with that merino. I should be ready to ply on Thursday. I’m deliberately trying to spin thicker singles now just to see if my control is good enough for that. I’ve also discovered that if I use thicker chunks of roving, it’s easier to spin thicker. I’ll know for sure if I have been successful when I ply it. I’m hoping my 3-ply this time will be closer to worsted than to fingering.

So now that I’ve spun at the wheel tonight, I’ll go play with my drop spindle for a while.

Until next time.

On the Road with my Drop Spindle

This week I’ve been in Texas visiting family. It has been a really lovely time – Mom and I sat and knitted a lot, and I made excellent progress on the Callicarpa scarf.

Since I obviously could not bring my spinning wheel on the plane, I brought my drop spindle and some practice wool. I figured if I’m going to learn to use a spindle, this would be the perfect opportunity to start. So I made a point of spending some time each evening with my spindle. Good thing I had no real expectation of being any good at all! It’s much harder than spinning on a wheel. Although, I got enough done that I had to wind it off onto a chopstick because the spindle was full.

Today my sister graciously drove me to the DFW Fibre Fest, so I could look for more spinning fibers. It was a nice festival, but nowhere as big as SAFF. I bought three really lovely batts from one artist, and a huge, incredible silk lap from the woman who dyed it. I’ll post pictures when I get home. Now I’m all excited to start spinning some of the silk hankies I’ve got, as practice for the lap.

Tomorrow I’m returning home to South Carolina. This week has really flown by, and I’m grateful for the time spent with family. We are too far apart and see each other in the flesh too little.

Until next time.

Real Food Sunday – It Feels Like Cheating…

This is one of those weekends. Lots of “outside” activities and the time change. We were out late last night, and today we have the Little Yellow Music House. So I decided to give myself a break this week and buy pre-packaged frozen vegetables to use in my lunches this week. They had a couple of tasty-looking options at Whole Foods – see this post’s pic. Organic, no weird ingredients, OK.

So the only real cooking I needed to do was the chicken that goes into the lunches with the veggies. I also use it in snacks and as protein with breakfast every day.

And happily, I was completely done in the kitchen by 1:30, so plenty of time to spin and shower before we head out.

Until next time.

My Daily Spin – Day 129

OK, so I’m not blogging even close to every day – but I’m still spinning every day, and still gaining the benefits of daily practice. I’m just about done with the second set of singles of the green merino, to be plied as 3-ply. I should finish up the spinning tomorrow night, and then ply Friday night.

I’ve decided I’m going to do some Blue-Faced Leicester next – I have both some undyed “practice” BFL and a beautiful dyed braid. I posted that picture last time. I’ll spin & ply a little of the undyed to make sure I have the ratios right, then do some of the braid to see how the colors come out. If I really like it, I’ll order more. I still have my Christmas gift certificate to The Woolery!

Until next time.

My Daily Spin – Day 119

I was really glad to get to my wheel today. It is the most relaxing activity I do these days. The Merino Fusion feels pretty normal to me now, I cruise right along with it. I’ve discovered that if I split it up into little pencil-sized strips (aka pencil roving) it makes life pretty easy.

I’m considering doing something a bit different when I finish this batch of 3-ply. I won’t be done with the merino yet, but I think I might spin something else for a bit, just to try some of the other lovely fibers I have. Either some really lovely dyed Blue-Faced Leicester, or a silk-merino blend.

Until next time.
