Valuable Lessons

There was a lot of swearing at my wheel tonight. I plied all the merino/silk blend that I spun over the last week, very nearly 4 ounces on one bobbin. I had thought to do it all via center-pull ball, since the only limitation, as such, is will it wind onto the ball-winder. And I knew it would, at least size-wise.

BUT this fiber is slippery enough that after about 3 ounces it wouldn’t hold in position, and slipped to the top to wind around the center core. Which will not work. So I had to break it and do it in two chunks. So, lesson 1.

Lesson 2: this particular fiber does NOT do well with that plying method. In particular the outer strand kept tangling at the bottom with other strands that slipped down.

So, for the rest I will spin onto separate bobbins and ply from them directly.

Until next time.

Diameter Practice

I have committed to spinning this entire pound of merino-silk blend at a steady diameter. That will give me two things. First, the practice is excellent. Just like when I first started spinning, some days are going better than others. Last night when I was tired, not so great. Tonight, better. The other thing it will give me is a large quantity of consistent yarn that I can make something lovely with. The first bobbin is about half full. A few more days and I’ll ply it. That will tell me what kind of yardage I’m getting, so I can predict (more or less) how much yarn I’ll end up with. And honestly, if I really like it and want more, since it’s commercially made I can get more of the same fiber.

Until next time.

Settling in for a Long Haul – a Pound of Merino Silk Blend

I’m switching gears in my spinning for a while. I like making the wool/sari silk rolags, but I feel like doing something else for a while. One of the fiber purchases I made last year at SAFF was a pound of merino-silk blend – multi-colored – as one of my “incentive” purchases, to inspire me to put in the work that has paid off so richly. I actually bought two different colorways of the same blend – I already spun the other one. If you’ve been reading my blog, you’ll remember that the lovely fallish colors pretty much grayed out in the spun/plied result. It was good practice, BUT.

So I kind of put off this one, afraid I wouldn’t like the result. However, I’m happy to report that it’s really quite lovely. The fiber is more blue/purple, and it’s spinning to be a silvery-purple-blue look. I like it.

I’m using this as more practice at spinning to a steady diameter. I’ve got my sample to compare back to. It’s nice to be able to just sit down and spin. Since it’s not that exciting, I may not blog about spinning for a while. But you’ll know that I’m getting my time at the wheel in every day.

Until next time.

Adventures with Sari Silk

Yesterday I made a 3-ply sample skein of my sari silk, and swatched it. I really thought it was about a worsted weight, but I was wrong. It got about 7-8 WPI, which is Aran verging on chunky, and it demanded a size 10 needle. Even with that, it STILL made a thick, dense fabric. The texture is also very interesting – not really “silky” as I have gotten with raw silk fibers. But it does drape well.

So today, for contrast, I spun another sample and plied it as a 2-ply. It’s drying now, I’ll swatch it when it’s done.

Then I thought, hmmm: wonder what would happen if I used my hand cards to blend some plain white wool with some of the sari silk, and spun that? So of course, I had to try it. I made 6 rolags, and spun them worsted method instead of woolen. Partly because I didn’t want to confuse checking out the fiber blend with using a still-unfamiliar technique, and partly because I wanted to see how rolags do when you spin them using the worsted method. It came out really nice, so I’m excited. It’s a big enough sample that I’ll be able to guesstimate what kinds of quantities might be required to make, say, a scarf.

Until next time.

Art Batts All Done, and on to Sari Silk

I set myself a goal to get through all my “special” fibers before this year’s SAFF in October. So I’ll know what I want more of, and what I don’t. So since my last spinning post, I’ve finished my last two art batts.

The first was a wool/silk blend, in a primarily cranberry color scheme. It has lots of lovely texture, and the colors are gorgeous. It was made by Crosspatch Creations. The vendor I got it from will be at SAFF again this year, so I’m excited to see what this year’s offering will be.

The second was a bit of a surprise. The top layer colors were all yellow/gold/orange, so I thought it would be light-colored. But underneath was a thick layer of dark chocolate brown wool, which made it come out dark with bright color highlights. It’s pretty, but not what I expected. This year I’ll know to check the “underneath” color.

Now I’ve started on my sari silk, which is silk from recycled saris. It’s quite different from the other kinds of silk that I’ve spun. The fibers are shorter, and it’s pretty slubby. Which gives it a very nice texture, so I don’t mind. I just have to be careful to enough twist in so it holds together. I have a lot, I bought 16 ounces, so I did a little 3-ply sample just to check how it comes out. Length for weight, how it looks at the ratios I used (8:1 for spinning & plying both). Once it’s dry I’ll swatch it.

Until tomorrow.

Release and Connection

That’s the theme for this week, apparently. Since my last post, I’ve traveled to Hooppath and home again, which was a much bigger journey than it sounds like.

I went with the intention of being cracked open emotionally and spiritually. In the spirit of getting what you ask for, that’s exactly what happened. I’m so grateful that I had arranged to take this following week off, as it’s allowing me to process where I’m at without having to deal with the world just yet.

I’m not a particularly good hooper, I don’t practice very much. I have made decisions about priorities that (for now) mean that’s going to keep being true for a while longer. But I love it, and when I find that time and space I enjoy the movement, and the challenge of doing things that you really can’t think about. You just have to do them. Not so different from spinning, really, in that regard. Practice makes better. And the spontaneity of “flow” is very, very good for me.

I also don’t think I’m a particularly good friend. I get absorbed in my own life and busy-ness, and just don’t attend to connections with others. The fact that I’m awkward in many social situations and basically a loner doesn’t help. So it was sweet that I got to spend some really lovely time with two friends from Columbia who were there. And I have tender hopes for a new friendship that’s starting.

So one thing that I’m finding is that this openness I’m experiencing is helping me speak my truth better. It’s a challenge. I have swallowed a lot of words to avoid perceived possible negative consequences. And I hide my emotions, at least the tender ones. So I’m allowing myself to express more sorrow, uncertainty, doubt, tenderness, and it’s good. I build up huge mental “stuff” and I’m trying to let that go. The husband helps me with this – he’s really good at that. When I let him.

And yes, I’ve been spinning since I got home. I’ll write about that tomorrow.

O.W.A.L. Sunday

No, that’s not a typo. Today I was Operating Without A List. Not normal for me on a Sunday, the day I spend getting ready for my week every week.

I hope I haven’t forgotten anything.

I got food cooked and lunches packed, snacks ready and food for dinner this week. I’m only going to work for two days this week, so that really helped. Starting Wednesday I’m off, and leaving for HoopPath on Thursday. I’m very, very ready for that.

I also binge-watched the entire season 3 of Orphan Black this weekend. Yeah. SO ready for season 4. Just set my Google alert. Because I’m not always up on when things happen, you know?

I also spun – yesterday I plied the woolen-spun fiber from last week, and today started on a silk art batt that I bought at SAFF last year. It’s turning out quite lovely.

Until next time.

The Trick to Spinning “Woolen”

I’m at least figuring out what the elements are to spinning my rolags using the woolen long-draw method. First, fiber prep. The better my rolags, the easier it is. But the real key is finding the right balance between letting the twist in and drawing the wool out. One hand controls how much twist gets in while the other draws the fiber out. I’m pleased that I have learned enough to realize that. If I keep practicing every day, I will undoubtedly improve.

Until tomorrow.

More About Hand Cards

I spun all of my rolags that I made yesterday. I don’t think I was any *worse* than I was when I tried it in my class! Practice makes better. I’m spinning these using what’s the “woolen” method, using long draw. The wool spun this way is much fuzzier and lighter than wool spun using the “worsted” method with short draw, which is what I’ve been doing. After I got done, I made more rolags to spin tomorrow night.

One of my friends asked about what hand cards are and how they’re used, so I’m adding a little photo gallery with pictures that I hope will help.

Start by putting fiber on one of the cards.

The two cards are used to comb the fibers out.

Then you transfer all the fiber onto one card and use the other card to push it into a roll.

Rolags, At Last!

Yes, the hand cards came out today and I carded 9 rolags to spin. I don’t think they’re very good, they’re not very tight, but I should be able to spin them.

This is another one of those areas where practice makes better. My last rolags today were better than the first ones, and I started to feel how to roll them tighter. Five of them are just plain white Targhee, fiber from my class, and for the other four I blended in some teal wool that I had pulled from the last art batt. I’ll start spinning them tomorrow.

Before I did the carding, I finished spinning the dark sparkly fiber, and it will get plied tonight after I eat dinner.

Until next time.
